TJ. Snow Company was founded by my father on April Fool’s Day, 1963.

tj snow euipHe finally got up the nerve to start his own company at age 43, after 10 years of traveling 11 states representing the Taylor-Winfield brand of resistance welders.

To fund the start-up, he had to convince his father to accompany him to the bank to co-sign a 90-day note for $5,000.00.

My father was a hard worker and a talented salesman and he made more money his first year in business than he’d ever made before.

There were hardly any auto plants in the Southeast back then, so it took 11 states to supply enough business to support one salesman.

Most of his customers at the time were manufacturers of appliances and fabricated wire products.

tj snow euip 2After a short stint as a sports writer for the local paper, I joined the business in 1973.

As a psychology major in college, I had very little electrical and mechanical aptitude, but I learned that we could hire the expertise needed once we got an order.

Today we cover most of the United States and Mexico and we employ approximately 95 people, most of whom are in Chattanooga.

However, several of our Regional Sales Managers live in their territories.

We build and rebuild standard and special design resistance welders and most of our customers now have a connection to the auto industry.

We have a fully-equipped CNC machine shop to support our manufacturing activities.

We got into the used resistance welder business through trading in old machines on new ones.

When we discovered that we could usually make more money rebuildingtj snow equip 3 and reselling used machines, suddenly we were in the used machinery business.

Today we have around 300 used resistance welders in stock, most of which I had a hand in purchasing.

We look forward to hosting the MDNA Southeast Chapter meeting in Chattanooga, our home town, which is known as “the scenic center of the South.”– Tom Snow, CEO, T. J. Snow Company
